Vivint vs DIY security: the comparison most articles get wrong

Leer en español

Search “Vivint vs DIY” and you will find two kinds of pages: affiliate roundups that recommend whatever pays a commission, and Vivint’s own marketing. Both skip the part that decides whether you will be happy in year three: what happens the first time the system does something you did not expect.

We sell Vivint, so treat this as a biased source and check it against your own priorities. But here is the comparison laid out honestly, including where DIY wins.

What you are really buying in each case

A DIY system is equipment plus an app. You buy the cameras and sensors, mount them yourself, pair them, and either self-monitor or pay a low monthly fee for professional monitoring.

Vivint is a monitored system with professional installation: a technician comes to the home, places the sensors where they actually work, connects the panel and cameras, and configures the automations. The monthly cost covers monitoring and the smart home platform.

Where DIY genuinely wins

  • You are technical and enjoy it. If running through an app’s setup flow is fun rather than a chore, DIY gives you control for less money.
  • You are renting short term. Peel-and-stick sensors make more sense if you will move in a year.
  • You want the cheapest possible entry. A couple of cameras and a door sensor can be bought outright for a low one-time cost.

Where DIY quietly falls apart

  • Placement. Most false alarms and missed events come from bad sensor and camera placement, not bad hardware. That is a physical skill, and nobody walks your house for you.
  • Connectivity. A camera that depends on your Wi-Fi stops recording the moment the power or the router goes down. A proper system addresses that with backup connectivity and battery.
  • The boring middle. Notifications are easy. Knowing which alert matters at 2 a.m., and having a monitoring center act on it, is the product.

The questions that actually matter before you sign

  1. Who installs it, and what does that include? Ask explicitly whether installation is done by the provider’s own technicians.
  2. What is the contract length and the equipment charge? Understand whether equipment is financed monthly, and what happens if you cancel.
  3. What happens during an internet or power outage? Cellular backup and battery are the difference between a system and a set of cameras.
  4. Who do you call for support? The provider that installs it, or the retailer you bought it from.

How ADCS Group works

We are a Vivint retailer. We help you choose the configuration and we place the order; the installation is performed by Vivint’s technicians, and monitoring and support are handled under Vivint’s terms. We do not install and we do not provide post-install technical support, and we tell you that up front rather than after you sign.

That distinction matters: if what you need is a licensed technician in your house configuring the system correctly, that is what the Vivint model provides. If what you want is to mount cameras yourself on a Saturday, buy DIY and save the money.
